Gaining access to appropriate technical information can be a challenging part of the land management puzzle. Often, the main challenge is sorting through the multitude of information related to local, state, and federal programs to find the necessary guidance. Worse yet, sometimes the information from one organization or agency will contradict the guidance from another. The Driftless Area Initiative recognizes this difficulty, and is working to develop integrated information and technical resources to make management planning a little less confusing. Some resources that we have developed are available through the links below. Many more can be accessed through outside web pages. A few links to outside resources are also listed below.
Forest Management Assistance
This guide outlines federal and state programs available to help woodland owners manage their forests. Contact information for foresters working in the Driftless Area are also arranged by state and county, to help you get the assistance you need to develop a sound management plan and navigate the many potential pitfalls of setting up a timber sale or other management activities.
Forestry for Bird Habitat
This guide was developed as a forestry management planning tool for use in heavily forested landscapes where habitat for interior forest dependent bird species is a priority. This guide attempts to integrate the best available understanding of forest interior bird habitat needs with existing silvicultural tools and knowledge.
